Applying Math to the Real World: Bridget’s Story

Bridget has loved math and science for as long as she can remember, and now she plans to use it to solve real-world problems as she studies Mechanical Engineering at Bethel University in Minnesota. She’s also a member of its volleyball team, so she knows the value of hard work in and outside the classroom.

College: Bethel University, studying Mechanical Engineering

  • I have enjoyed math and science since I can remember. I love the foundational logic behind math, meaning that every solution has a rationale. I’m excited to directly apply math to the real world while studying mechanical engineering.

  • Winning this scholarship allows me to focus on academics in college rather than the financial burden that comes with attending university. After earning my degree, I hope to tackle some of the environmental issues by helping to create energy efficient systems.

  • My math teachers over my high school years, especially my AP Calculus teacher, have motivated me to pursue engineering and encouraged me to see my true potential.

  • In addition to academics in college, I will also be playing volleyball. I am so excited to find community within my team and within my classes.

  • I know how to sew clothes. I absolutely love getting to repurpose secondhand clothes to create my own wardrobe.

  • I wish I could learn how to wake up to my first alarm instead of having to hit snooze.

  • I would sleep in, make really good waffles for breakfast, do a craft with my friends, then play volleyball at an open gym.
